Hi guys,

Phase I registration starts Monday, April 1, and goes until April 26 at 4pm.  Below is an email of things to know about registration.  It's long, but full of information to help you get through it.  Questions I receive that are covered below will receive a cut and paste job back to you.

Before I get to registration information below, here is some class information.

*  First off, we still don't know who will be teaching some of the sections of courses.  If it says STAFF, it means I don't know yet.

*  There are no other courses being offered for summer besides the ones on the schedule.

*  BMED 4813 (CODE class aka Grady) is being offered for fall, but not summer.  There are 40 spots in the class.  The first 30 are first come first serve.  The last ten I will take off the waitlist and give to students graduating in December 2013.

* BMED 4803 GLE, Global Health Engineering, and BMED 4803 A, Bio-Inspired Design, are both being offered and count as depth/technical elective classes.  We only have 8 spots for Bio-Inspired Design, it is a permit only class for graduating seniors who have a need for an MSE type elective.

Check the schedule for the correct times on BMED 4602 and 4603.

Registration notes

(1)  If you need to speak with Kim or myself regarding your schedules, make an appointment at http://www.advising.gatech.edu/appointments/Freshmen and Sophomores, make appointments only with Kim.  Come prepared.  Work up your potential schedule before you come.  Registration is not the time to plan out the rest of your time here, although I encourage you to do that as well.  Registration is the time we focus on the upcoming semester only.

(2)  We can only give overloads and permits for BME courses.  We have no information on how other departments do their business.  Example:  I don't know why an INTA class is major restricted, or if they will be adding more seats to LCC.  (Btw, LCC is now called LMC, Literature, Media and Communcation).  Use this chart to find out who to contact in other departments for information, overloads, and permits:  http://www.registrar.gatech.edu/registration/oprequest.php

(3)  Waitlist:  Specifically, there will be no overloads allowed for BMED 1300, 2300 or BMED 3110.  For all other classes, the waitlist will kick in.  Spots on the waitlist will be filled based on the number of credit hours students have accrued.  This is because we need the students with the highest number of credits to move on towards graduation.  Here are the instructions for using the waitlist:  http://www.registrar.gatech.edu/registration/waitlisting.php.

To see your spot on the waitlist for a class, view the "Student Detail Schedule" on OSCAR.  Note:  your waitlist status may change over the period of registration, which I know is frustrating.  Example, you are number 2 on the waitlist for BMED 3300 and have 100 credit hours total towards graduation.  Another student waitlists the class and has 105 hours.  When I update the waitlist, that student will leapfrog you into second place.  It's an imperfect system, just know that a waitlist spot is not permanent.   Consider the alternative, most other departments just do things first come first serve, but I take the time to order the lists because I believe that students with the most hours need to get out of here, thus opening up future spots in classes for others.  So I take the time out to rank the lists to be as fair as I can.

(4)  I will resend the longer email regarding research, but bottom line is this.  You arrange research for credit, you fill out the attached form, have it signed by your research advisor, attach a description of the work you will doing in the lab, turn it into me, and I will give you a permit to register the research.  If you are doing research for pay or PURA, just email me the name of the professor's lab, and I will give you a permit to register the research.  Research for pay is 2698 (Fr/Soph) or 4698 (Jr/Sr).  If you are doing research with a non-BME professor, you register through that department, not the BME department.  If you want to have the research count as depth/technical elective credit, you must have it approved by Dr. Le Doux.

(5)  Time tickets will come out on Friday (today)

(6)  Here is a list of humanity courses you can take:  http://www.catalog.gatech.edu/students/ugrad/core/corec.php
Here is a list of social science courses you can take:  http://www.catalog.gatech.edu/students/ugrad/core/coree.php
Here is the list of Minors that you can pursue:  http://www.catalog.gatech.edu/academics/minors.php
Here is the list of required US Perspectives courses to choose from:  http://www.catalog.gatech.edu/students/ugrad/core/up.php
Here is the list of Global Perspective courses to choose from:  http://www.catalog.gatech.edu/students/ugrad/core/gp.php.  See #12 below.

The list of BME approved Certificates is attached

(7)  Advisors can't help with financial questions.  For anything financial, including HOPE, contact the Office of Financial Aid, http://www.finaid.gatech.edu/, or the Office of the Bursar, http://www.bursar.gatech.edu/.

(8)  Here is a link to common error messages:  http://www.registrar.gatech.edu/registration/error.php

(9)  For Phase I, the maximum number of hours students can register for is 18 hours.  This will be raised to 21 hours in Phase II.

(10)  BME students can take up to nine hours of courses pass/fail, but only humanity/social science courses, or breadth elective courses.  All others must be taken for grade.  However, note that not all humanity/social science courses are offered pass/fall.  You also have the option of changing eligible courses from pass/fail to letter grade and vice versa by the first drop date later in the semester.  You would need to submit a Grade Mode Change form:  http://www.catalog.gatech.edu/rules/10a.php

(11)  Students graduating under the 2012-203 Catalog year must fulfill the Global Perspective requirement:  http://www.catalog.gatech.edu/students/ugrad/core/gp.php.  This means any student who started at Tech in Summer or Fall, 2012If you started earlier, you don't need the GP, no matter what DegreeWorks says!

(12)  The most up to date Prerequisite Chart is at http://acad.bme.gatech.edu/downloads/prereq_chart.pdf.

Let me know if you have questions.  Happy registering!

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) Program

The Kellogg School of Science and Technology invites applications from students who are interested in its ten-week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) Program; a program provides its participants the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research in one of our laboratories side by side with our world-renowned faculty.
The goals of the program are to (1) increase the number of underrepresented and first-generation to college students who consider careers in biomedical research; (2) make program participants feel comfortable in a lab setting and increase their research skills; (3) teach participants to think critically about the theory and application of biomedical research; and (4) increase the participants’ proficiency in communicating scientific concepts.
Students can choose to apply to either the La Jolla campus in California or the Jupiter campus in Florida with one application. Apply here.
Program Dates
June 10 - August 16, 2013 (ten weeks)

Welcome to the BME Academic Office Undergraduate blog!

This blog exists mostly for informational purposes for BME Undergraduate Students, to answer questions, highlight opportunities, and provide a place where students can find out what's going on.  The idea is to reduce the need for email, and to give students a place to find things out quickly, as well as be interactive with the Academic Office, and other students.  This tab, "What's New", will consist of news, updates, information, reminders, etc.  It is tied to "Labels" on the right side for easy searching.

Besides the informational tabs, there is a one about and for students called "Spotlight", which will be a place to highlight awards and accomplishments, among other things.  We don't always know what's going on, so if you have been recognized for something, or know someone who has, let us know!  It will also be a place
where we will randomly select students to tell a little about themselves, and where you can upload things such as study abroad blogs, class videos, etc.  Material included here is up to the discretion of the Academic Office staff.

Another tab for students is labeled "Promotion".  We get quite a few requests for emails about events or meetings to be sent to all BME students.  We don't send them all out.  But we can put those under this tab, so you can see what groups or meetings that other students are trying to promote.  Note that groups that have a direct connection with BME will still also have their notices sent via email, such as BMES, AEMB, SAB, GTNeuro, BROS and the Pioneer.

Our last tab "Slivers", is for us, members of the Academic Office.  Here we will post anything we want, either fun or serious, related to BME or not.

Check the site often, there will usually be something new!
